COMMITTEE A ON ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND TENURE

 University and College Faculty

  • Has your academic freedom or free speech been violated?
  • Having trouble securing or maintaining tenure?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you need to contact the AAUP.

At its inaugural meeting on June 11, 1999, the Conference of the District of Columbia voted to form Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure. The purposes of this committee are to advocate, maintain, and promote the principles and standards of free speech, academic freedom, tenure, and professional responsibility as championed by the AAUP since its inception in 1915.

The Conference will defend its principles as outlined in the Red Book of the AAUP Policy Documents and Reports. Thus, we will serve all faculty, regardless of their  AAUP membership status, who seek our assistance and have a legitimate complaint. Nevertheless, we wish to encourage all faculty to join the AAUP, the voice and conscious of the Academy.

Specific services that the Conference is committed to provide are:

If you feel your faculty rights have been violated and abused, alert the Conference. In the mean time, also, contact your university chapter of the AAUP and work through all internal grievance processes available to you within the institution.

We also want to hear from those who are willing to donate time, money, and/or resources in order to build a strong Conference and effective Committee A. Active involvement in the Conference offers a rare opportunity to achieve the model of a democratic organization within the world's capital freedom and democracy. Together, we can build a showcase university system for present and future generations following the principles of the AAUP:
